Lightning protection
Historical
All peoples and all religions, in order to explain the phenomenon, have associated lightning with the wrath of the gods and with the notion of punishment for faults and sins.
It was only in the 18th century thata scientific approach to lightning began with the work of Franklin, Nollet, Dalibart and other scholars.
“In September 1752, as a thunderstorm was approaching, Benjamin Franklin went to a meadow near Philadelphia. He was alone, accompanied only by his son, who feared the ridicule of failure. Convinced of the nature of lightning, and wanting to demonstrate it, he borrowed his son's kite and hung a key from the bottom of the hemp string that held it. However, as the storm cloud drew near, Benjamin Franklin touched the key with his finger. The hemp being damp, which made it slightly conductor, a very visible spark occurred. Other sparks followed, each more numerous than the last. We can now appreciate Franklin's recklessness, who, fortunately for him, didn't think to use a conductor!”
The electrical nature of the storm was demonstrated.
The lightning rod invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1752, thus made it possible to avoid, to some extent, the damage caused to buildings and structures, and to their content.
