Understanding the lightning risk

Up to 100 lightning strikes are recorded every second on the surface of the Earth.

The study of the phenomenon highlights 3 main categories of risks arising from lightning strikes:

  • Direct lightning strikes: The main characteristic of lightning is first and foremost the flow of a gigantic electric current which, by circulating in matter, causes significant damage to structures.
  • Indirect lightning strikes: The power of the electric currents involved causes induced phenomena and electromagnetic fields that lead to the destruction of electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Conduction phenomena: When lightning strikes the ground, electrical charges dissipate into the soil, creating a rise in electrical potential. The potential difference (voltage) between two given points in the ground or on the surface allows the current to flow.

Lightning presents numerous dangers, and the consequences of a lightning strike are severe (spectacular damage, fires, destruction, explosions, deaths, etc.). To protect oneself, implementing a lightning protection system is essential.

The lightning protection system consists of an outdoor lightning protection installation to protect against direct lightning strikes and an indoor lightning protection installation to protect against indirect lightning strikes.

We install a lightning rod to protect themselves from direct lightning strikes.

A surge protector is installed to protect against indirect lightning strikes.

The lightning protection system is complemented with Equipotential Spark Gap to ensure total protection.
